Virtual File System type is not defined

Postby David » Tue Dec 05, 2006 1:15 am

Hello,
When I am trying to map a windows share over a filesystem in AIX, I am receiving a message that the specified Virtual File System type is not defined.

What is the cause on this message and how do I correct it?

Allow me to eleborate:
We do not use the GUI. The systems we are installing Sharity on do not require a GUI. Thus, we are using command line only to mount/unmount shares.

The specific share I am mounting is a windows "hidden" share. The command I am executing is: sharity mount //[servername]/[sharename$] /somedir/otherdir/mountdir -U[username]

You should use the syntax

sharity mount smb://[servername]/[sharename] /somedir/otherdir/mountdir -U[username]

with Sharity 3. The prefix (URL scheme) defines the virtual file system which is mounted.

See "sharity man mount" for more information.

Not sure how I missed it before. Probably since I never upgraded Sharity on the legacy system where we began using it.

In any event, that worked wonderfully. Thanks!

Your help will be much appreciated!

I am having the exact same error msg as the original poster, David, but I have always been using the recommended command-line mount syntax as shown below.

This is the way the error showed up after freshly rebooting both my Sun server where the Sharity3 daemon runs as well as the client machine where the drive resides that I have shared from Windows XP and which is visible and mountable from a Windows Vista machine on my network.

# /usr/local/sharity3/bin/sharity mount //smb:WinXPmachinename/F /mnt/F
The specified Virtual File System type is not defined
# /usr/local/sharity3/bin/sharity mount //smb:WinXPmachinename/F /mnt/F -U my user name
The specified Virtual File System type is not defined

before rebooting I was getting a variety of seemingly NFS-related errors shown below so I thought a reboot might help but now I just get the friendlier error msg shown above

I had tried stopping (killing) the sharityd daemon and stopping and starting nfsd with no luck

# ps -efa|grep sharity

root 18787 18139 0 12:06:02 pts/7 0:00 grep sharity
root 18785 1 0 12:05:47 ? 0:00 /usr/local/sharity3/sbin/sharityd -f /usr/local/sharity3/etc/config
#
# /usr/local/sharity3/bin/sharity mount
