GOODBYE LB6

Post by Walter » Mon Jun 23, 2014 2:27 pm

Well I'm done with LB6.

Back to LB5 where everything works as it should.

I will admit that LB5 is not as fancy as LB6 but who cares when LB5 WORKS.

I agree. "Ready for Prime Time" means clearing up memory issues, providing full functionality, and a HELP file.

The authors were so careful with LaunchBar 5 that I upgraded without hesitation. :(

What procedures did you follow to return to LB5? Just delete LB6 and rename the old LB5 app (the name was changed upon installing LB6)? Does the index and pref follows from LB6 to LB5? I guess not.

I’m considering doing the same thing.

Before i installed LB6 i compressed the LB5 application. I always do that with all my applications just in case the new version does not pan out.

Then trashed LB6 the old fashion way by throwing it in the trash---did not run the uninstaller.

Decompressed LB5 and launched it. All my previous set ups for LB5 were all there. Did not have to re-train LB5.

However the installer for LB5.6.4 is on the Objective Development site http://www.obdev.at/products/launchbar/ ... egacy.html

I restored using Time Machine. First, quit LaunchBar, then enter Time Machine. Go back a few days, find LaunchBar in Applications, Right-Click, choose "Restore to..." Then you will return to "present time" and choose Applications as the folder to which you will restore the old LaunchBar.app.

I also see that "Legacy" versions are at the bottom of the project page. You can download LaunchBar 5.6.4 and use the DMG file to install. This may be a lot simpler way. :)

The only feature worth my money for the upgrade would be extensions/actions. However, as a paid user I would like more response from the developers to my queries regarding creation of those actions. If something is broken, tell me its broken. If something needs more work, tell me its work-in-progress. Don't just be a saint and keep the paid users guessing and wondering.

To those who have not upgraded, don't be fooled by this:

In addition to a 30-day trial period LaunchBar 6 can be used for free as long and as often as you like. It just occasionally invites you to take a short break, allowing you to breathe and relax.

The word "occasionally" means almost every time you open LaunchBar.
And given the memory issues, indexing problems, reduced responsiveness, it seems wiser to stay away from LB6 though I would miss the larger interface.
Basically, I think they didn't get enough people to test their LB6 beta, so they just threw us into it.

Goodbye LB6!!

In a crazy way I'm glad to read others are having headaches with LB6.

Maybe LB6 was created in anticipation of the OS X Yosemite Apple's newest operating system for Mac, and that's why it does not work properly in Maverick.

However i am rather disappointed that the developer has remained quite as a church mouse by not clearing up the issue by telling us we are all wet or that there are some problems with LB6 not working as it should with Maverick. Meanwhile i'm keeping my 20 bucks in the bank waiting for a stable confirmed working LB6. In my line of work with my Mac i can't afford the headaches of LB6. So for now it's learning all about Alfred ( now there's a free }.

Have you, or anyone else here, actually contacted the the Developer and put yourprobems to them rather than relying on this Forum? Might be worth doing if you want an answer.

I have contacted the developer directly and if you read some other posts in this forum you will find that others have tried too.

Fair enough, it is most annoying when developers ignore customer communications and it is something that I do believe is far too widespread, (I am afraid Apple are a “usual suspect” in my eyes for this” I have had a problem with Mail not opening correcly first time that is a persistent problem that they seem unable or unwilling to sought out). One approach I have sometimes, but no way infallible, is to get hold of the CEO’s contact details and contact him direct. It realy does depend on how much the behaviour /non-behaviour is important to you and how much time and effort you wish to expand on trying to get it sorted! :(

@ Allsop

I own a video/audio recording business and my customers are extremely important because they are the ones that pay my rent etc. Also my service to them is my reputation on the line and I make every attempt to have a happy client. And yes, sometimes no amount of hands on help will make some clients satisfied. However, always stay in touch and for sure always leave the door open.

For this developer to avoid any communication especially via this FORUM he sponsors shows me a complete disrespect. Perhaps this developer is making more then enough money on his shareware and feels there's a sucker born every time LB is sold.
So please tell us MR Developer is there a fix in the works or was LB6 really programmed for the new OS ?

Agreed, (except for your penultimate sentence) but especially with your last sentence!

Exactly!!
Bugs will always be there, some existing features will break with every update but staying mute while users wonder and guess is totally unacceptable and disrespectful!!
When I started using LB, switching from a broken QuickSilver, LB developers were known to be very helpful and quick to respond especially via emails. Wonder what events made them change their mind!!
