'Press the space bar to trigger text input'

Postby stevehaines66 » Fri Jun 13, 2014 11:20 am

i have just upgraded to version 6

'Press the space bar to trigger text input' does not work. I get a new information window popping up with details of whatever is already on launch bar?

I have checked preferences and looked around this site but cannot work out how to make it work

Cheers, Steve

Pressing the Space bar triggers text input only for those items that are able to deal with the enterd text (like search templates, calendars, or lots of actions, workflows and services that accept text arguments).

For other items the Space bar either triggers Quick Look or, if the item is "navigateable", it triggers navigation.

Can you clarify the steps that you would need to take to, say, enter a calendar appointment using text input. It is unclear.

I think I have the same problem. I want to use the 'quit application' action to quit an application. When I type quit and then press enter, the large type modus appears and displays 'Quit application'. I've made a GIF of it:

I figured out that by beginning to type "Calendar" I can then hit the space bar to trigger text input.

That's also working for me, but actions with text input aren't working.

I can't figure how to get "Quit Application" to work either.

Roller, try this:

Bring up Launchbar
Type 'runapp', press the right arrow on your keyboard, then use up/down keys to pick a running app.
Press the 'tab' key. This tells Launchbar 'I want to do something with this running application'.
A new menu appears of options of what you can do appears. I can pick 'quit' with the 'return' key.

Try using 'instand send' or drag-and-drop files onto Launchbar.

It's a little odd, but imagine you're constructing sentances in subject-verb order when you use tab. If you instead press 'space', you can run other actions on those applications.

davemee,

Thank you very much. That works. I would've never thought to use "runapp". Didn't even know that command existed. Much appreciated. Like you said it is a little odd. Kind of like going around the block instead of taking the alley to get to your destination. Hate to say this but much simpler in Alfred. But I still prefer Launchbar. :D

Thanks davemee! You can do the same a lot quicker though: Bring up launchbar and type cmd + R. Or you can type the name of the application and then press tab and type quit.

Thanks! That's easier to remember and quicker. :-)

Back to the original topic:

How is the "Quit Application" Built-in Action meant to be used? I get the same result as shown in the gif and do not see how I can directly use the action to quit applications.

@davemee: your suggestion is much appreciated and works well, but I would like to get "Quit Application" itself to work in order to improve my understanding of how LaunchBar really works (like many others I am a recent switcher from Alfred 2).

Just checked and found out that "Quit Application" is broken in LB6.
While I do not get the Large Type text, the application does not quit.
Edit: (sometimes it does work).
I will write an action for it.
Meanwhile, I want to suggest you to use this for more productivity:
1. Hold Cmd key when you press Cmd+Space for activation LB
2. While holding this Cmd key, now press the Space key. You will able to navigate between various open apps using the Space key.
3. Then, you can use shortcuts which you would normally use while switching applications like

h for hiding the application (you already hold the Cmd key, so just press h)
q for quitting application

Btw, nice wallpaper spacek33z. Can you upload it somewhere?

I have spent about an hour trying to make this feature work. Pressing space NEVER allows me to enter text. When I choose calendar and press spacebar, I just get a quicklook preview of the application icon. This should be easy but it is not.
