[REQ] Ability to index multiple folders in single list

Post by jackg » Sun Nov 06, 2011 10:37 am

Hi,

I would be great if I was able to add multiple folders into a single rule and use it as a collection of all the files.
Then I can be sure that i will find what I want with a sub-search so the performance will be still perfect for every day (general) use.

Workflow:
- add multiple folders to a single index
- set access via sub-search only (for better performance on large collections)

Reasons:
- spotlight is not able/reliable for this task
- fuzzy search
- better performance

Do you know »Custom Lists«? You can add Custom List to your index and place files or folders in it (accessing via Sub-Search only is possible as well).

Thanks for the reply manfred.

yes but custom list doesn't provide options and schedule like the folder list
and it doesn't index folder contents (recursively)

The scenario I described above will make Launchbar the perfect tool for cataloging the content of multiple paths with no performance loss.

You know, we can do this now with multiple folder indexes:

Code: Select all

Press ⌘+Space , Type "index1WithSingleFolder" , Press Space , Type "searchTerm"
Press ⌘+Space , Type "index2WithSingleFolder" , Press Space , Type "searchTerm"

will not work for more that three indexes, so if we just could:

Code: Select all

Press ⌘+Space ,  Type "indexWithMultipleFolders"  , Press Space , Type "searchTerm"

edit: another issue with the cataloging use is: when you index an external disk e.g. /Volumes/DiskX
if the disk is unmounted Launchbar will show Yellow rectangle/exclamation icon for that index and deletes the indexed content. It would be great if it saves the content and still (if required) automatically updates the index when the disk mounts.

Yes, you are right. I've filed a feature request for both of your requests. Thanks!

Hi, any news on these?

I've another Idea for multiple folders in single index:
if launchbar indexer would recursed through symlinks we could create a folder and symlink multiple folders/files in it to be indexed, then add it to the launchbar index.
