LaunchBar should be on the Mac App Store

Post by David Winter » Fri Jan 07, 2011 4:00 pm

I love LaunchBar. I have bought it and couldn't imagine using a Mac without it.

And I think more people should see the light.

Right now, the Mac App Store is the hottest place to sell OS X software. Millions of people - who otherwise wouldn't hunt around the web for interesting tools - now have a chance to read about, buy and safely install software right from the Apple menu.

I hope that Objective Development uses this platform. I'm aware you guys will lose some money per copy sold to Apple - but I think the absolute sales number would justify it.

Right now, looking for LaunchBar on the Mac App Store will bring up "Alfred". Obviously, something's wrong with this picture ... :)

That's all.

+1 … but not exclusively please.

BTW: Would be sweet if the App Store would be searchable from LaunchBar like e.g. iTunes (shif-space).

Not sure it would be a good idea to go head to head with Alfred on the app store. Alfred has got an engaging and active developer and is fast becoming a religion. Folk love it, even though it doesn't do half the stuff that Quicksilver and Launchbar do. (I guess for most people, it's enough). Apple also seems to favour apps that go that extra mile on the UI, too.

I still think LaunchBar should be on there, it's ace. Competition is no reason not to have it for sale where potentially millions of users get to know about it.

See what the App Store did for Evernote

Post by David Winter » Wed Jan 12, 2011 3:37 pm

OK, I started this "LaunchBar should be on the Mac App Store" and I'm still hesitant to tell the gifted people at Objective Development what to do with their business - they might prepare a version for the App Store, anyway.

But if not ..: Here is an impressive story about what the App Store has done for Evernote (I know; that's a different kind of beast, but the sheer dynamics you can see in that graph are impressive).

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11 ... loper.html

"A day after the new store opened, Evernote reported that 90,000 Mac users downloaded the new app on its first day, about 40,000 of which were users new to the service."

I guess a few thousand new users wouldn't hurt: More money O.D. can invest in our favorite Swiss, err Austrian Army Knife. :)

BTW This works as a custom search template for the Mac App Store

Code: Select all

macappstore://ax.search.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/search?q=*

Somehow the template doesn't work if App Store.app isn't running. So I also created a quick script with a delay to give App Store.app a second to start if its not already running.

Code: Select all

on handle_string(s)

   tell application "System Events"
if (exists of process "App Store") is false then
tell application "App Store" to launch
         delay 1
      end if
   end tell

   set _url to "macappstore://ax.search.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/search?q=" & s
   open location _url

end handle_string

Hi!

I'm very excited to see this script, but I'm not sure how to implement it. I copied and pasted the whole thing into a new search template, but that didn't work ... ?

I tested the thing again and acutally you don't need the Applescript anymore.
If you create a custom search with …

Code: Select all

macappstore://ax.search.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/search?q=*

… it should work just fine.

Launch Bar is indeed very amazing and very useful. I personally use Quicksilver along cause I like the display on that one better. But if you want something that can manipulate and open almost everything LaunchBar is definitely the way to to and you can purchase it now on a Bundle along with other great apps for real cheap at http://bit.ly/n6JPni...

You may also find a complete review on it at blog.mauricioquito.com

Enjoy

App Store Search is built into LaunchBar since version 5.1.
