drag & drop every way but my preferred way

Post by bigcloits » Fri Dec 26, 2008 10:01 pm

The LB docs specifically note that an action must be chosen for items “dragged and dropped” using the keyboard. The docs say:

When you drop an item onto a folder using the keyboard (either via Command-D or Command-V) the Default Action as defined in the Advanced pane of LaunchBar Preferences will not be performed to prevent accidental invocation. Instead you have to confirm the desired action by selecting the corresponding item from the pop-up menu. Note that this menu can also be navigated using the up/down arrow keys.

Unfortunately, this behaviour specifically clashes with exactly what I want to do. I don’t feel the need to be protected from “accidental invocation” in this context any more than I need to be protected from it on a mouse-based drag and drop. I suppose there may be a greater risk of moving something unintentionally with a careless cmd-D than with a careless drag and drop, but still ... shouldn’t I get to decide? Is there a hidden preference maybe?

I’d really like to eliminate those extra 2 keystrokes. Sounds ridiculous to say that, but hey we’re LB users here: we’re all about the efficiency!

Ideas, anyone?

I might have the wrong end of the stick here.

But to move files & folders to a different folder I select the file I want to move or copy in LaunchBar ⇥ search for/select the folder I want to move it to, then hold down ⌘ when hitting Return (This moves the file without bringing up the menu. Holding ⌥ instead ⌘ when hittong Return copies the file instead of moving it without showing the window popup). This is new to the version 5 beta.

Jono, you definitely have the RIGHT end of the stick, my friend. You are da MAN. That’s it. That’s exactly what I was hoping for. Well, almost. It does pretty much solve my problem, eliminating a step at the very small cost of adding the modifier key. Awesome. And really not that hard a feature to spot, because the action visibly changes when you press the modifier keys. :-) But it wasn’t documented, and I missed it.

And I’d still like to actually set a preference to default to move files, because, y’know, adding the ⌘ is so arduous. ;-) I’ll submit the feature request.

Glad it helped you out. I guess it would be nice to set your own default in the settings, but this is so much better than it was before that I'm happy enough with it as it is now :)
