I’m guessing you would like to keep the right-command + space key combination for Spotlight.

You will need Karabiner, a third-party application, to do what you’re after. Karabiner makes changing up the keyboard relatively easy.

The one downside, LaunchBar’s Instant Send can’t be used.

  1. Install Karabiner and launch it
    Tip: Karabiner is a Dock-less application, so it can be easy to lose it under other application windows, if you lose it, just bring the Karabiner window to the front from Karabiner’s menu bar icon → Preferences, or by using Launchpad or Spotlight.
  2. Switch to the Misc & Uninstall tab
  3. Click Custom Setting → Open private.xml
    We’ll be editing the private.xml file to add our own item. You’ll find the private.xml file is located here:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Karabiner/private.xml
  4. Edit private.xml
    You’ll want to edit this file, TextEdit will do the job just fine. Right click on private.xml → Open With → TextEdit (or your preferred editor).
  5. Clear the existing content and replace it with the following:

    Code: Select all

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <root>
      <!-- file path -->
      <vkopenurldef>
        <name>KeyCode::VK_OPEN_URL_APP_LaunchBar</name>
        <url type="file">/Applications/LaunchBar.app</url>
      </vkopenurldef>

      <item>
        <name>Change left-command + space to launch LaunchBar</name>
        <identifier>private.left_command_space</identifier>
        <autogen>
          __KeyToKey__
          KeyCode::SPACE, ModifierFlag::COMMAND_L,
          KeyCode::VK_OPEN_URL_APP_LaunchBar,
        </autogen>
      </item>
    </root>

    This assumes you have installed LaunchBar into /Applications, if you have installed it elsewhere, you will need to change line 6 to point to it (<url type="file">/Applications/LaunchBar.app</url>).
  6. Save and exit
  7. Go back to Karabiner, switch to the Change Key tab
  8. Click the Reload XML button
  9. You should now see the Change left-command + space to launch LaunchBar entry at the top of the list, enable it
  10. Test left-command + space key combination, and right-command + space
  11. You might want to remove Karabiner from menu bar, switch to the Misc & Uninstall tab, and uncheck Show icon in menu bar
  12. All done, celebrate!
