The only way I could boot was by using an external drive with the same volume on it and OSX and using the option bar I chose the external disc.I had a miserable time of it.I repaired permissions, used Disc Warrior the whole gamut and the called Apple and they had me install OSX again. It was a horrible evening!

That sounds like a right pain in the arse.

How can I get rid of that "mach_kernel" file from my hard drive running MacOS 10.8.5 without re-installing MacOS 10.8.5 ?

The file should be an invisible file which you need .Don't attempt to "get rid of it" Instead get the combo update.Which can be found at this URL http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL16 ... 10.8.5.dmg

Excuse please.I meant the combo update which can be found at http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL16 ... 10.8.5.dmg Thesupplementary made it visible and the combo update makes it invisible again
