Feature Request : Bandwidth Throttling

Post by harpingon » Thu Nov 25, 2010 10:51 am

Love little snitch.

Anyway, I want to be able to 'Allow' a connection but to limit its bandwidth to a cap in KB/sec. I want (for example) to allow Steam to connect, but I don't want it to hog all my limited bandwidth.

I do this at the moment using ipfw pipes, but it'd be so much nicer to have it in Little Snitch.

For info, this is what I do to limit Web (port 80) traffic in general:

ipfw pipe 1 config bw 60KByte/s
ipfw add 1 pipe 1 src-port 80

But... This limits all web port 80 traffic to a total of 60KB/sec. I really only want to do this for specific applications. Which I think is where Little Snitch could come in.

Anyway, I think it'd be a great feature, please consider it!

This is a feature that I would love to see in LS3.
Just to give you a common use-case: I'm using "iTunes match", and it uploads my music for a looong time, during which my internet is dreadfully slow. Similar uploads frequently happen when sharing pictures, etc.

I think there's definitely a good use for this features. Together with the ipfw rules pointed out in post #1, it might even be fairly simple to implement such a traffic shaping in LS3.

I am a paying user and would love this feature. Otherwise I may have to switch to murusfirewall.

I came to this forum to write down this feature request and I found this one :D

Little Snitch would be the ideal tool to set this.

In my case, I am following video tutorial in streaming and when daemon apps like DropBox, Google Drive, BackBlaze begin to sync the bandwidth shuts down and the video stops for some seconds.

I have bought App Tamer that allows to reduce priority for apps to access processor power, but it doesn't mean that they use less bandwidth.

Thank you.

Would be an excellent addition. Maybe even for a LS ver 4 (so existing users would pay an upgrade price) - making it worth ObDev's time to implement the feature.
