replacing current serial activation code?

Post by krelbow » Sat Jan 26, 2008 8:38 am

I recently took over my brother's computer and have learned
he had pirated software, including Little Snitch. Does anyone know:

1. is the computer or our IP address compromised in any way?
can i redo everything on my end with a new activation which i purchased?

2. how do i unregister the current version without reinstalling
the entire OS? i cant figure out how to enter in a different serial number.

If anyone can help i would appreciate it. I am going through
the process of purchasing the software which he stole (..idiot).

thanks

I believe I have an Answer, but I'm not sure it works (I didn't try it!)

In the folder

Code: Select all

/Library/Application Support/Objective Development/Little Snitch

there's a file called 'registration'.

While the contents seem to be obfuscated I'm pretty sure that it contains your registration data. I believe that if you trash that file and empty the trash Little Snitch should fall back into unregistered mode and you should be able to register it with your own serial.
It could also crash your complete System, so have a complete Backup at hand, if you want to try this.

Instead, I'd recommend talking to Objective Development directly. I didn't try this, because of the above mentioned risks.

regards,
Ludwig

EDIT: Your question number 1:

Your IP is OK, as it gets reassigned every time you log onto the internet. Since you never know what apps your brother used, you might want to reinstall the OS anyway - on a mac it's quite painless, really.

Thanks. I contacted obdev and here was there response:

To remove this code please do the following:

1) Launch Disk Utility.app (from /Applications/Utilities) and do a
"Repair Disk Persmissions" for your startup disk.

2) Download the installer again from:
http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/download.html

3) Open the Installer and click on "Uninstall"
(Your current rules will be preserved)

4) Open the Installer again and click on "Install"

You should now be able to enter your license key.

Hope this helps with anyone trying to do the same in the future.

OK, that looks reasonable :-)

So basically it's not possible - or at least not recommended - to remove Little Snitch's registration without reinstalling it.

Well, that's fine.
