Using a VPN with Little Snitch

Postby cai » Sat Jul 28, 2018 8:16 pm

I use Little Snitch v3, and I just started using NordVPN to secure and obscure my internet traffic.

I’m noticing that whenever I use the VPN, Little Snitch reports connection attempts to IP addresses which aren’t resolved to a domain. I assume this is as a result of the traffic being routed through the VPN’s servers rather than direct to its target. But the IP addresses aren’t all the same.

My question to anyone else in the same position is, how do I manage this? I don’t want to start allowing any app to connect to any IP address (else why bother with LS?), but I also can’t see how to control this if all traffic gets rerouted through NordVPN regardless of its destination. …or am I missunderstanding something obvious?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions!

(PS. apologies if this has been covered before, but you can't search the forums for "vpn"!)

I had the similar issue. Not sure if it happens to NordVPN only, because I didn't find any solution to the problem at that time, So I switched to another VPN provider named Ivacy VPN. It works fine at most of the times and the domain issue is resolved, but sometimes I see the same error prompts.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've had to cancel my NordVPN as it's basically unusable with LittleSnitch.

Did Ivacy work straight away or did you need to tweak settings? And btw are you using LS v3 or v4? Thank you!!

I am using NordVPN for almost a year now and it has proved to be the best service to use. I started out with a 3 day trial (now extended to 7 days) and have since signed up because of their great coverage. They are offering some great discount on their Black Friday VPN deals that I recommend you should take advantage of.

Aside from NordVPN, you can check this great VPN review website for more services that suit your needs: http://www.bestvpnguru.com

NordVPN is offering $107.55 for the whole three years this Black Friday whereas Ivacy VPN is offering a massive 87% discount on its 5-Year Plan billed at just $80. I am using both Nord and Ivacy based on my needs and I think Ivacy is offering the best Black Friday VPN deal in the market right now.

Ivacy is offering 87% though but I prefer PureVPN because it is better than Ivacy and it is offering 88% discount.

I didn't realise my question would entice a torrent of bots advertising their VPN services :?
Apologies all.

This problem likely has more to do with which VPN software you use rather than which VPN service you use.

You should be able to configure most VPN services to work with OpenVPN (free software) which will then make the VPN look like just another network interface. Little Snitch will behave appropriately under these circumstances. The problem is with proprietary VPN software that acts as a proxy rather than as a network interface. In these cases, Little Snitch believes the proxy software is making all outbound network requests... because it is.

@ mcgroarty -

NordVPN incorporates OpenVPN in making its connections. It may be doing it in a way that trips Snitch's trigger ...
I use NordVPN and get the same interruptions this thread is about.
