LS 4.1 - OS X problems

Post by the-gog » Fri Jun 15, 2018 6:17 pm

I updated LS to 4.1 this afternoon, and it's resulted in my Mac running like treacle. It's just taken 50 minutes for me to get to a usable desktop, and even then I get the spinning beachball in pretty much every program I've struggled to launch. My Mac is now pretty much unusable. The only change has been the upgrade to LS 4.1. It looks like I'm going to have to remove it after several years' use, and find an alternative.

Any one else had similar problems since upgrading to LS 4.1?

I had the same experience, it took me even the approximately same time to get my Mac into restarting. Activity App was no help to kill all LS processes, LS daemon survived every attempt to shut it down.

Finally I pressed the off button (no way I could open the Apple menu to restart) and started the Mac in safe mode (keep Shift pressed when booting). Then I de-installed LS.

After that harsh way of shutting the Mac down it took a while until it was working normal again, but it did.

BUT: This was not the first time I experienced this. The same happened with the beta when it was released. I did report this to Obdev but it seems they could not reproduce it.

4.0.6 still works, but is vulnerable.

PS: I'm running the macOS public beta.

Same here - and all network connections are restricted too, I must disable Little Snitch to connect to any host.

Obdev wrote me a message to generat special log files - but at the moment I have not enought time for it, obdev is interested in to solve this problem, write a message to the support to get the info how you can generate the log files ...

No reason to give up at the moment, obdev is a good developer ... no developer knows all special computer configurations. I use a macmini 2012, which mac you have?

It's just the same thing, LS takes a while launching....and slow down all the start up .... Please make an update, even a beta one, to patch this sad 4.1 !

Mac Mini 2012 too. Interesting.

And of course I won‘t give up Little Snitch. It is a very fine piece of software I have been using as long as I have been using a Mac. My Mac feels kind of naked without it.

No doubt here about the developing skills of Obdev and their intention of fixing this asap.

At least it's not just me. Even local network connections were taking tens of minutes to establish. I can't even check for updates within the program as it gives the following error message:

"An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made.
Please visit the Objective Development website"

Oh, it's now decided it can check for updates. And now the menu bar network meter has stopped working - it's greyed out.

My iMac is a late 2012 21.5 inch 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB RAM which I purchased new in July 2013.

Exactly the same problem here as posted by original poster. Machine is MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory. Graphics are NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB Intel HD Graphics 288 MB. Running Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.5. No other problems whatsoever and machine is well maintained by long-time Mac user. Also long time Little Snitch user, never having any problem with it in the past. The problem is very serious, rendering my Mac nearly unusable.

Machine is slow as a glacier to start. LS taking forever to load. All processes are affected by slowdown. Problem noticed with second start after LS 4.1 install, and subsequent starts. Uninstalled LS 4.1 using LS uninstaller and problem disappeared immediately. Reinstalled LS 4.1 and problem immediately reappeared in same form as original problem. I have never used LS beta software. After around an hour, machine starts to act in a more normal fashion, but is not normal -- still somewhat slow.

As I am on the road and need this machine to work, I am going to have to uninstall LS 4.1. Will be back home in about a week and perhaps can help troubleshoot the issue then. For now, I am simply going to have to say, "I have this problem, too."

+1

Very similar symptoms. Macbook 15", the fan starts to go nuts and Chrome and Spotify show the beachball mouse cursor when I mouse over them. Regular quit via Command-Q does not work on them. I check Activity Monitor and Little Snitch Agent is unresponsive and hogging the CPU. Killing LS Agent, another one spawns. Restarting the laptop takes a few minutes, but it does seem to fix it, but the problem re-occurs when I lock/unlock the screen or after some period of use - it's hard to tell exactly when the problem starts. Logging out and logging in does not fix the problem and made the laptop so unresponsive I had to hard reboot it. I'll come back here and post more if I figure it out. Please let me know if there are any diagnostic activities I can do to help you fix it.

I've had a reply from ObDev:

We're aware of that problem and are currently working on a solution

Just installed 4.1 and none of my known web sites are loading in Safari 11.1.1 [macOS Sierra 10.12.6]. If I turn off the Network Filter, everything is fine.

Where can I download version 4.0.6? Yes, I know it's vulnerable.

Also having problem with Safari not loading certain websites like 'twitter.com' and 'drudgereport.com'.

Turning off filtering enables loading. Examination of rules for Safari no help. It seems everything is turned on.

Little Snitch 4.1.1 does fix the problem, at least for me.

Regarding my previous post in this thread, all problems mentioned seem to have been fixed by LS 4.1.1. I've been running that version for a little over a week now and no issues whatsoever. I did a complete uninstall of 4.1 before installing 4.1.1. I did not keep rules or anything else; all fresh.

i installed the lastest Version and my mac was booting for about 1 hour. the mac was unusable so i recovered it from time machine. After updating again to latest version, my mac took 1 hour to boot. So i decided to stop using this little crappy software!
