conflicts between Little Snitch and our VPN

Post by AJ0 » Sun Mar 13, 2016 10:21 pm

Hello,
I have tried running Little Snitch (LS) in parallel with a popular VPN client (based on OpenVPN).
To my surprise, both work flawlessly until the very moment when the computer goes to sleep.
After wakeup the VPN crashes leaving a system without a network connection behind. The
only cure is a complete system restart. Not very handy.
Would anybody know whether changing the rules in LS (or changing VPN settings) might solve
this problem ? Has anyone seen the same ?

I am running El Captain, 10.11.3, the latest LS version, and Mullvad as VPN.
Best - AJ

I don't use VPN software but have a friend whim does he suggested checking the settings in the VPN software as there maybe something that will allow the connection whilst your mac sleeps.

I doubt whether there would be any use changing rules within Little Snitch

You have almost certainly have your OpenVPN configured to disconnect when the computer goes to sleep. I use TunnelBlick which allows you to turn off that checkbox and I've had no problems.

Thanks for the hint, I think you are right. Problem is I am using a proprietary VPN client (for convenience).
But I know (and see again) that Tunnelblick offers more options.
BTW, my problem is gone since I cleaned up the SSID list in the Macs network settings. I cannot
explain why it worked, but it did.
May be this simple fix helps other users.

Modify rules in default profile to deny all connections. Create a “VPN” profile that allows all connections. Let “Automatic Profile Switching” do the rest
