Yes, but it's extremely tight. Look at the bootloadHID code at http://www.obdev.at/products/avrusb/prjprog.html
This code fits into 2k of boot loader section on the ATMega8.

Yes, that is possible with a composite HID descriptor. Getting the descriptor right is not always easy, especially with little experience in HID design. I would recommend that you borrow a USB keyboard with integrated trackball and run a diagnostic tool on it which prints the HID descriptor. This wo...

The RC oscillator clock must be calibrated to half of the system clock, that's 8.25 MHz. This is not one of the default rates which can be calibrated with AVRStudio. I did calibration by changing the fuse values temporarily so that the clock rate was output at the CLKOUT pin and measured it with a s...

I have heard reports that some of the 8 pin devices don't work in HVSP mode, maybe due to the difference you found! I have not gone through all the tedious diagrams in all data sheets when writing the original firmware. I'm quite confident that the Tiny11/12, 13 and 45 can be programmed in the same ...

You don't need libusb for AVR-Doper in HID mode. That's the advantage of this mode and why we implemented it this way!
Some avrdude binaries have broken support for AVR-Doper in HID mode. See the following thread:

Ich wuerde Ihnen da einen Blick auf das Projekt i2c-tiny-usb (verlinkt von m) raten. Das implementiert einen USB auf I2C konverter. SPI sollte mit noch weniger Aufwand moeglich sein. Falls Sie andere Gruende haben, auch Inputs zu lesen, dann wuerde ich Ihnen raten, den PowerSwitch Code dahingehend z...

First of all: Have you checked the programming voltage of 12 V on the RESET pin? And the -B option does not influence the HVSP clock, only the ISP clock. You would have to insert delays in the firmware. I've checked with avrdude and my ATTiny45 (it has the number 0613, don't know which revision this...
