Re: accountsd and googleapi

This is probably for Google's mail push notifications, which are hosted on that domain. This is the mechanism that lets Mail.app get mail updates as they happen rather than polling at fixed intervals. Push notifications save network, CPU, and power resources. If push notification registration fails,...

Re: Request: Use safe characters in default filenames for Little Snitch backups

While that's interesting, I hope you can anticipate the problem of introducing colon characters as well. Many of us back up to a file server that's shared with Windows machines. :)

Re: Using a VPN with Little Snitch

This problem likely has more to do with which VPN software you use rather than which VPN service you use. You should be able to configure most VPN services to work with OpenVPN (free software) which will then make the VPN look like just another network interface. Little Snitch will behave appropriat...

Request: Use safe characters in default filenames for Little Snitch backups

As a US user: * Open Little Snitch rules * Select File->Create Backup Observe: * Default filename contains forward slashes: "Little Snitch - 12/30/18.xpl" Expected: * Default filename contains only safe characters Notes: I suspect the / date delimiter appears because Little Snitch uses reg...

Re: License upgrades are a scam

If anyone is upset about the price, understand that: * macOS is a much smaller market than Windows. The potential customer base is small. * Very few people take network security seriously. Most macOS users even scoff at antivirus software. The potential customer base just got smaller. * Very few of ...

Re: Little Snitch Affecting VLC Video Playback

It would be very surprising if this were related to Little Snitch. But you could try opening the Little Snitch preferences to see if turning off "show status in menu bar" changes anything. That would prevent it from frequently rendering status updates. How certain are you that Little Snitc...

Re: What AntiVirus software do you use with Little Snitch?

In case this is of interest to anyone else: Avast didn't deliver, but I've finally landed on BitDefender. According to multiple reviews it has a near perfect virus and PUA detection rate, and it has the lowest system overhead of any other Mac AV software. Of interest to Little Snitch users, it doesn...

Re: [False alarm] Kernel panics since Little Snitch 4.1.3 (5187)

Another panic eventually happened. It took longer to happen once I uninstalled Little Snitch, at least a full week now. But these crashes have been random enough that the quiet period was probably just a roll of the dice. A nice and expensive hardware problem is the most likely explanation at this p...

Re: Subscribing to blacklists

Any idea how to add this list: m It's supposedly in the correct format, but I'm guessing for a previous version of Little Snitch? That list appears to be in the format you would use if you were permanently importing the set of rules. From comments on the site, their support for the Little Snitch fo...

Re: What AntiVirus software do you use with Little Snitch?

Thank you for the suggestions. In the forums for Avast Antivirus, Avast's Mac product lead says they will introduce an option for paid users to disable the promotional pop ups. This means I'll probably return to Avast. Its hit on system performance is minimal, and every review I've seen has it at or...

Re: What AntiVirus software do you use with Little Snitch?

So far I'm not having any luck. The only workable candidate seems to be Avast!, which fully disables interception when the network options are turned off. However, Avast! includes pop-up ads for other Avast! products even in the paid version. I don't want to pay to install adware on my machine. Are ...

What AntiVirus software do you use with Little Snitch?

Most modern AntiVirus software includes a firewall component, and this doesn't play well with Little Snitch.

Those of you who run AntiVirus software along with Little Snitch, what AV software do you use and how well does it work for you?

Change order of Little Snitch and AntiVirus network ordering?

I would like to run AntiVirus software that includes firewall features. I tested Kaspersky and Avast, but both of them take control of traffic before it reaches Little Snitch. As a result, Little Snitch sees virtually all outbound traffic as coming from the antivirus network proxy program. I can't p...

Re: Block any inbound connection *except* LAN

I do indeed have that rule, thank you. It didn't come up in the list of redundant rules along with the Skype-specific one, so I thought the other rule that did come up with it was the one that made it redundant.

Looks like I'm good to go!
